The American Society on Aging presented a webinar titled, “Helping Seniors with Finances” on October 17th, 2012. Dr. Amy D’Aprix led the webinar and provided tips and ideas for assisting older adults with financial organization as well as information about how to help protect seniors from financial scams and fraud. Dr. Laura Mosqueda, Co-Director of Center for Excellence on Elder Abuse (CEEAN) at the University of California, Irvine, in partnership with QunatiaMD, recently created a brief slidecast entitled, “Red Flags of Elder Abuse: Hx and Interview”. Targeted towards medical professionals, this presentation provides information about red flags that suggest elder abuse, the challenges of diagnosing elder abuse and the steps that medical professionals can take when they suspect abuse. The NYC Elder Abuse Center’s Multidisciplinary Teams offer case consultation in Brooklyn & Manhattan. Upcoming meeting dates are listed below.
- Elder Abuse Case Coordination & Review Team: Meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month from 9:30-11:00am in Manhattan at a different venue each month.
- Brooklyn Multidisciplinary Team: Meetings are held every Wednesday morning – except the first Wednesday of the month – from 9:00-10:30am at a convenient downtown Brooklyn location.

The Bronx Elder Abuse Task Force will be meeting regularly on the first Thursday of every other month: October, December, February, April, June, August. Meetings take place at the Bronx DA’s office. For more information, please contact Ellen Kolodney at kolodnee@bronxda.nyc.gov or (718) 590-2260.
Resources and Tools for Professionals
The December 2012 edition of the Center of Excellence on Elder Abuse and Neglect’s (CEEAN) quarterly e-newsletter, “Elder Abuse Bytes” is now available and includes updates on resources and developments in the elder justice field. The Elder Care Locator, a service of the Administration on Aging, is designed to connect individuals to services for older adults and families in their communities. This year marks Elder Care Locator’s 10th Annual Home for the Holidays campaign. While gathered together for the holidays, they encourage families, older adults and caregivers to discuss strategies to avoid financial exploitation. To help with these conversations, Elder Care Locator partnered with the National Center for Elder Abuse and Ageless Alliance to produce the “Protect your Pocketbook” brochure. Join the Field
Allegiant Home Care is seeking a Client Services Supervisor. This individual will oversee daily operations of Allegiant Home Care’s service provision, including case coordination, compliance with standards and contractual obligations and human resources. They will also be responsible for managing a team of coordinators with private Medicaid and Medicare caseloads. Ideal candidates will have worked in aging, at least a bachelor’s degree, experience and detailed knowledge of case coordination, home healthcare, and all of the ins-and-outs of this work in terms of regulations, relevant software, etc. For the complete job description and instructions for applicants, please click here.
The YM&YWHA of Washington Heights and Inwood is seeing a Coordinator for their Friendly Visiting Program. The Coordinator will manage the activities of this program, which pairs volunteers with adults 60 and older who are at risk for social isolation. The volunteers visit the homes of the older adults and provide companionship. Ideal candidates for this position will be bilingual (English/Spanish), have a background in social work and experience working with volunteers and older adults. The YM&YWHA of Washington Heights and Inwood is also looking for an Intake, Benefits and Entitlements Coordinator. This individual will manage the intake/registration and re-registration process for all members. They will provide guidance on entitlements and benefits to members and develop a system for information and referral services while also delivering these services. This position is full time and the ideal candidate will be bilingual (English/Spanish), have a social work background (LMSW preferred) and have experience working in the delivery of social services and benefits and working with older adults.
