Continuing Education

JASA has released the schedule and information about the Elder Abuse Training Institute (EATI) for Fall 2012-Spring 2013. EATI is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary training program designed to improve understanding of and response to the various forms of elder abuse. Stay Informed

The United States Senate Special Committee on Aging is holding a hearing entitled, “America’s Invisible Epidemic: Preventing Elder Financial Abuse” on Thursday, November 15th, 2012 beginning at 2:00pm. Testimony will be provided by numerous subject matter experts and will focus on prevention efforts to combat elder financial abuse through new federal, state and private sector initiatives. A live webcast of this hearing will be available on the committee’s website, which can be found by clicking here.

The NYC Elder Abuse Center’s Multidisciplinary Teams offer case consultation in Brooklyn & Manhattan.  Upcoming meeting dates are listed below.

  • Brooklyn Multidisciplinary Team: Meetings are held every Wednesday morning – except the first Wednesday of the month – from 9:00-10:30am at a convenient downtown Brooklyn location.

Resources and Tools for Professionals

Ageless Alliance has published a checklist of “Things Anyone Can Do to Prevent Elder Abuse”. Download the list here and check out their updated website by clicking here.

Published in recognition of Veterans Day, the Center for Excellence on Elder Abuse and Neglect (CEEAN) compiled resources specifically for older veterans, which can be accessed by clicking here. Along with information related to military benefits, the site has resources to help older veterans recognize and protect themselves from financial scams and frauds.

National Adult Protective Services Association (NAPSA) has recently launched a new online Resource Center. Created through funding from the Administration on Aging, the NAPSA Resource Center hosts an extensive collection of informational materials for Adult Protective Services (APS) workers and others in the field. It has been designed to focus on practice-based research and education, including hosting training webinars; reporting on promising practices in APS; providing technical assistance to state and local agencies; and hosting a national listserv for APS professionals.

As noted in last month’s Resource Round up, the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners has now published their 2012 Staff Education Tool Kit. It is available for download from their website and can be found by clicking here.

Join the Field

Heights and Hills, a community based provider of services for older adults in Brooklyn, is launching a brand new care transitions program called Bridge to Home. This collaborative program will target Medicare patients who are at high risk for readmission after being discharged from acute care settings. They are seeking a LMSW to help initiate and execute this exciting new program. Applicants should have experience working with older adults, ideally in both the community and hospital setting. The Jarvie Commonweal Service has a full-time opening for a Case and Administrative Assistant (ISP) to support the Individual Service Program. The CAA assists the social work staff in providing services and financial assistance to elderly persons of the Protestant faith in the NYC area. Lenox Hill Neighborhood House has been selected to operate one of New York City’s eight new Innovative Senior Centers. They are seeking an Assistant Director of Social Services to help execute and implement their vision for this program, which began on January 1, 2012. Candidates should have a background in social work and experience working with older adults. Weekend work will be required for this position. STAR Senior Center, located in Manhattan’s Washington Heights, is looking to hire a Case Assistant for their Senior Center Meal Program. Ideal candidates will have experience working in the field of social work, with preference given to candidates with an MSW. For the full job description and information about applying, click here.
