The Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) will present a Web Forum discussion with Jeannie Beidler and Shelly L. Jackson, Ph.D., on intersections between elder financial exploitation and other types of elder abuse. In 2013, Ms. Beidler became aware that a family member was abusing, neglecting, and exploiting her grandparents, and she resigned from her position as a Treatment Foster Care Social Worker to intervene and advocate on their behalf. Since then, she has remained active in elder advocacy efforts, sharing her experience on numerous occasions, including at the 17th Annual Virginia Coalition for the Prevention of Elder Abuse Conference and the 23rd Annual Virginia Geriatrics Society Conference.
Dr. Jackson is a Visiting Fellow at OVC. She previously worked as a research professor for the Institute of Law, Psychiatry, and Public Policy at the University of Virginia. Her teaching and research focus on victims of family violence, elder abuse, and individuals who are incarcerated. In 2006, Dr. Jackson received a grant from the National Institute of Justice to interview victims of elder abuse, their adult protective services caseworkers, and third party informants, which has led her to publishing numerous articles on elder abuse.
Visit the OVC Web Forum now at http://ovc.ncjrs.gov/ovcproviderforum to submit questions for Ms. Beidler and Dr. Jackson and return on December 4 at 2 p.m. (eastern time) for the live discussion. Go to http://ovc.ncjrs.gov/ovcproviderforum/asp/participate.asp for instructions on how to participate.
