    The Research to Practice (R2P) webinar series will host their next webinar entitled, “The Elder Abuse Suspicion Index (EASI): Why a Suspicion Index, and How it Can be Used” on Wednesday, October 30th, 2013. Presenter Mark Yaffe, MD, will share results from his research on the development and validation of a brief tool for physician use to support identification and assessment of the presence or absence of suspected elder abuse.     The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), in partnership with seven other federal agencies, released detailed guidance about the disclosure of client information by banks and other financial institutions. Financial institutions are often confused and conflicted about releasing client information in cases of potential elder financial exploitation because they wish to both protect their clients and respect confidentiality laws. This confusion has led to hesitancy in reporting potential exploitation. As the CFPB reported in their blog post announcing the guidance, the document “clarifies for banks and other financial services providers that reporting suspected elder financial exploitation to appropriate authorities does not generally violate the privacy provisions of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act.” To read the full guidance, please click here.

    The Fall 2013 edition of the Center of Excellence on Elder Abuse and Neglect’s  (CEEAN) quarterly  e-newsletter, “Elder Abuse Bytes” is now available and includes updates on resources and developments in the elder justice field. Check out the full e-newsletter by clicking here.

    The Center of Excellence on Elder Abuse and Neglect (CEEAN) in partnership with the nonprofit Institute on Aging has developed a mobile app for California law enforcement officers that puts information about elder abuse at their fingertips. Users of the app, “368+ Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Guide for CA Law Enforcement,” can reference California Penal Code information relevant to elder abuse, signs of elder abuse and neglect, tips for communicating with memory-impaired adults, resources and more. The app is currently available free of charge and is compatible with Droid devices, iPhones and iPads. To learn more, click here.

    Law students at the William Mitchell College of Law in Minnesota have also developed a mobile app to assist first responders addressing possible cases of elder abuse. To learn more about this app, please click here.
    Join the Field
    Jewish Home Lifecare is seeking an intern to assist with a program that makes use of telehealth questionnaires to identify potential elder abuse victims. The intern will interview clients over the phone and in person, coordinate case conferences and provide referrals to medical, legal and/or psychosocial supports. Applicants should be social work students or individuals working or studying in related fields. This role requires some travel in Manhattan and the Bronx, but much of the scheduling is flexible. The internship requires a commitment of 7.5 hours per week, is paid and is available for the current semester (until January).
