Continuing Education

The JASA Elder Abuse Training Institute’s (EATI) next session is on Tuesday, March 19th and is titled, “The Role of Service Professionals”.  This training will provide a comprehensive overview of elder abuse for service professionals such as social workers, case managers, geriatric care managers and housing assistants who may encounter elder abuse in a variety of settings. Ashton Applewhite, a dedicated and decorated writer and journalist, is in the process of touring a talk titled, “This Chair Rocks”. She humorously explores the common misconceptions about aging held by people both young and old. Personal anecdotes and extensive research guide her examination of the most detrimental outcome of these misconceptions: ageism. Ashton will next present “This Chair Rocks” on Monday, March 18th through the The Geriatric Mental Health Alliance of New York and The Brookdale Center for Healthy Aging. Discussions focus on issues of importance to elder care professionals and caregivers. The NYC Elder Abuse Center’s Multidisciplinary Teams offer case consultation in Brooklyn & Manhattan.  Upcoming meeting dates are listed below.

  • Elder Abuse Case Coordination & Review Team: Meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month from 9:30-11:00am in Manhattan at a different venue each month. The next meeting will take place on April 3rd, 2013.
  • Brooklyn Multidisciplinary Team: Meetings are held every Wednesday morning – except the first Wednesday of the month – from 9:00-10:30am at a convenient downtown Brooklyn location.

Resources and Tools for Professionals

LinkedIn, the social networking site, has several active and animated groups for professionals working in aging. Participants frequently post articles, discussion topics, resources and more. NYCEAC social media team members currently participate in the following groups:

The National Resource Center on LGBT Aging has added a new set of resources on Elder Abuse in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Community, including a guide for elder abuse professionals working with LGBT victims, information about the risk elder abuse in the LGBT community and more. The US Department of Justice (USDOJ) has links to several brief training videos for various justice professionals on their website. Check out these videos by clicking here. Included in the collection are clips from In Their Own Words, an collection of elder abuse victims speaking about their experiences.

Join the Field

The Kings County District Attorney’s Office is seeking an Elder Abuse Unit Victim Advocate. The Advocate will be responsible for immediate outreach to victims of elder abuse, providing safety planning, managing the Elder Abuse database, following up with various aspects of elder abuse cases, and working on other related tasks and activities in the Elder Abuse Unit. Applicants should have at least a Bachelor’s Degree and a background in social work or a related field. For more details and to download the full job posting, click here.

Older Adults Technology Services (OATS), a nationally recognized non-profit working to harness the power of technology to change how we age, is seeking an individual to act as Site Manager for their Senior Planet Exploration Center. Opened in January 2013, the Senior Planet Exploration Center is a 2,8000 square foot technology-themed community facility located on W25th Street in Manhattan. The site manager will be responsible for the direction of the Center’s daily operation and for planning, organizing and implementing new and innovative programs and activities. The Center Manager works closely with the OATS staff to ensure that the Center is a welcoming, safe, comfortable, and supportive environment.
