Family gatherings are more commonplace in December, and older adults without families can experience more acute social isolation. Since isolation is both a risk factor for and a consequence of elder abuse, we decided to ask you - our social media followers and colleagues - to commit to speaking with an older adult in December. JASA/Legal Services for the Elderly in Queens (LEAP)
Donna Dougherty is the Attorney-in-Charge of JASA’s Legal Services for the Elderly in Queens. She has been an attorney with the program since 1986 and its director since 1994. Legal Services for the Elderly provides direct legal services to Queens residents 60 and older in such areas as evictions, foreclosures involving predatory lending and deed fraud, public benefits, healthcare and family violence.
Along with JASA CEO, Aileen Gitelson, Donna developed Project LEAP, a joint legal and social work program which uses interdisciplinary teams to combat elder abuse. Ms. Dougherty is also an adjunct professor with New York Law School. Prior to entering law school, Ms. Dougherty was a community organizer.
