2019 Oscar Watch: Actors Set to Break the Silver Ceiling

    On February 22, 2019 · Add Comment
How older adults are portrayed in popular culture matters. When ageist stereotypes are served up to us in heavy doses, older people are dehumanized, setting the stage for abuse, neglect and exploitation. As Hollywood’s awards ceremonies kick into gear, you only have to pull up the latest movie listings on Fandango to see that the “silver ceiling” on the silver screen persists.

The evolution, realities and need for reform of New York State’s Guardianship Law “Only those with a calcified heart could have read the recent New York Times artcle, I’m Petitioning…for the Return of My Life, without becoming heartsick and concerned,” commented Risa Breckman, Executive Director of the NYC Elder Abuse Center, after having read the December […]

    On November 12, 2018 · Add Comment
The Stop Elder Abuse and Mistreatment (SEAM) at Lifespan of Greater Rochester is a potential “third alternative” to help meet the needs of abused elders, through the intervention and rehabilitation of elder abuse perpetrators. The 11 week psycho-educational program is designed to help offenders increase their knowledge of elder abuse and accept personal responsibility for their actions. It also seeks to help them identify healthy attitudes about aging and new behaviors that support an elder’s ability to thrive and prevent future abuse and mistreatment.

    Thank you for #CounteringIsolation: Results

    On February 6, 2018 · 2 Comments
Family gatherings are more commonplace in December, and older adults without families can experience more acute social isolation. Since isolation is both a risk factor for and a consequence of elder abuse, we decided to ask you - our social media followers and colleagues - to commit to speaking with an older adult in December. Our hope was that, by sharing this campaign, we could support older adults and contribute towards the prevention of elder abuse during the 2017 holiday season.

When a Nurse and a Social Worker Collaborate for Elder Justice, Good Things Happen

    On January 23, 2018 · Add Comment
The most effective teams, whether in sports, business, or elder justice, comprise people with a complementary set of skills. From that perspective, Ferrell Moore and Laura Brown are a dream team, combining their distinct personalities and talents to create a methodology for training healthcare personnel to detect, treat, and hopefully prevent elder abuse. The award-winning training curriculum they developed for Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis has produced an increase in awareness and knowledge in identifying and intervening in elder abuse.
