    Emergency Medicine & Elder Justice: Making the connection

    Each year, many older adults come to an Emergency Department (ED) with injuries purportedly related to a fall or other accidents. However, we know that many of these injuries are the result of elder abuse and neglect. This ED visit presents a key opportunity for elder abuse to be detected, to have evidence collected, to report to the authorities, and to initiate appropriate interventions, yet emergency physicians receive little training in elder abuse and have few tools to assist them in detecting abuse.

    Elder Abuse Multidisciplinary Teams: Planning for the Future

    We are excited to announce the release of a monograph that showcases which resulted from a day long Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Symposium entitled, Elder Abuse Multidisciplinary Teams: Planning for the Future, attended by elder justice experts and funders from across the country. Held in New York City in September 2014, the symposium focused on highlighting the value of MDTs and ways to sustain and replicate them nationwide.

    Neglect Me Not: Elder Abuse in Prisons

    Recent human and civil rights reports and research suggest that the poor social and environmental conditions of confinement have devastating effects, particularly for older persons. Victimization, medical neglect, discrimination, and a lack of age appropriate services for older adults in prison exacerbate physical and mental illnesses. These conditions present as a violation of human rights and cruel and unusual punishment, and for older adults fall under the World Health Organization’s definition of elder abuse. Society is largely unaware of these concerns, and there is even less awareness of the traumatic narratives of physical, sexual, psychological and emotional abuse, exploitation and intentional or unintentional neglect that began long before these older adults reached their golden years in prison.
